As a Host Family for Gung Ho Programs, I understand that I am obligated to provide my foreign student with the following throughout the duration of their stay:
1. A safe and comfortable sleeping area which includes the following:
- A traditional home, town home, or apartment that is NOT a trailer or motorhome.
- An individual bed for each student you are hosting with sheets, a blanket, and pillow.
- A room may be shared with a child of the same sex as the student, but not the same bed.
2. Living Space Cleanliness
Foreign students are responsible for keeping their area tidy during their stay. You are not required to be a maid service for them and we encourage you to show them how to wash their sheets and keep their living space clean and tidy. As a host family you agree to provide your exchange student with access to the following:
- A vacuum, laundry detergent, etc.
- Access to a laundry machine
3. Sufficient meals each day
Breakfast: It is up to you as to whether you prepare and eat breakfast together with the foreign student or provide the food for the student to prepare for himself or herself. If the foreign student is to prepare the meal by themselves, please make sure that there is food readily available and that they know how to prepare it.
Lunch: Gung Ho Programs provides lunches for the foreign students on scheduled program days. You are responsible for providing lunch on days designated as “free time with host families.”
Dinner: It is your responsibility to provide sufficient food for dinner each night.
We understand that families have very busy schedules, and it is not required that you have a sit-down prepared meal every night, but we highly encourage that you do so as often as you can. This is a great time to connect and engage with your foreign students. Please feel free to ask him/her to participate in helping you prepare the meals together. Again, it is up to you as to whether you prepare and eat dinner together with the foreign student or provide the food for him/her to prepare.
4. Transportation to and from the drop off and pick up location
- You are responsible for transportation to and from the daily activities prepared by Gung Ho in a timely manner according to the schedule.
- You may drive them yourself, carpool with a neighbor, or make arrangements
- for them to ride the school bus.
- If the foreign student requires any personal local transportation other than what is noted on the Gung Ho schedule, he/she is required to give you notice in advance of their transportation needs so that you can determine if it is possible and that it will work with your schedule.
- All drivers must have had their license for at least 6 months before they are allowed to have a student in the car with them: No learners permit.
5. Personal hygiene and bathroom needs
- Please provide a bathroom (private or shared) with a functioning lock on the
- door and allow time each day for them to bathe or shower.
- Bathing customs differ between various cultures and families, so make sure that
- the students understand your family’s rules on times and duration of
- bathroom/shower use.
- Please make sure that there is toilet paper always available.
- It is the student’s responsibility to provide hygiene needs such as deodorant,
- toothbrush, and so on.
6. Dangerous activities NOT to be allowed:
